The Haber Process Flashcards
1
Q
What does the haber process produce
A
Ammonia
2
Q
What is needed to make ammonia
A
- Nitrogen, which is obtained from the air
- Hydrogen, which comes from natural gases
3
Q
The haber process is a….
A
Reversible reaction
4
Q
What are the conditions
A
- 200 atmospheres
- 450°C
- iron as a catalyst
5
Q
What is the ammonia used for
A
- nitric acid by the Ostwald process
- also you can react ammonia with nitric acid to get ammonium nitrate
- ammonium nitrate is a good fertiliser
6
Q
Equation for the haber process
A
N2 + 3H2 ——» 2NH3
7
Q
Why is pressure increase during the haber process
A
As the higher pressure favours the forward reaction, so the pressure is set high to get the best % yield
8
Q
Why is the temperature increased during the haber process
A
- increasing the temp means that the equilibrium will move the wrong was
- however a higher temp increase rate of reaction, so they ONLY increase the temp to speed up the reaction
