Tests For Anions Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three substances you can test for
A
- carbonates
- sulfates
- halides
2
Q
How do you test for a carbonate
A
- add dilute HCl
- if carbonate CO2 gas is given off, test using limewater
3
Q
How do you test for sulphates
A
- add dilute HCl
- add barium chloride solution
- if a white precipitate forms compound was a sulfate
4
Q
Why is HCl added for the test for sulphate’s and HNO3 for halides
A
To get rid of carbonate or sulfite ions, which also produce a precipitate which could be confusing
5
Q
What is the test for halides
A
- add dilute nitric acid
- add silver nitrate solution
6
Q
What ion is it if a white precipitate is formed
A
Chloride ion
7
Q
What ion is it if a cream precipitative is formed
A
Bromide
8
Q
What are you on is it if a yellow precipitate is formed
A
Iodide ions
