The Gentic Code Flashcards
What is meant by genetic code
The genetic code is the set of rules by which information encoded in genetic material (DNA or RNA sequences) is translated into proteins by living cells.
What is a codon
A sequence 3 bases on the DNA or RNA
What is a gene
A sequence of bases on a DNA molecule coding for a sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain
What is non coding DNA
Non-coding DNA sequences do not code for amino acids
What is a non overlapping code
each base in a sequence is read once and is only part of one triplet
What is a degenerate code
A feature of the genetic code; more than one triplet can code for a particular amino acid
What is the benefit of a organism having a degenerate code
Mutations can happen any time the DNA is copied- the degenerate code at least partly protects living organisms from their effects
triplet nature
a triplet code make a genetic code for 64 combinations (4 x 4 x 4 ) of the GC and provide plenty of info in the DNA molecule and specifically the placement of 20 AA
What is + of the GC being degenerate
protects and prevents mutation affecting the functionality of the protein
