What do you think about the food industry, both globally and in your country?

First and foremost, I believe that globalization and the modernization of the entire industry as a whole (in general) has caused the processes in food production to be aimed at reducing costs and replacing natural ingredients with artificial and synthetic combinations…
En primer lugar, creo que la globalización y la tecnificación de toda la industria en general ha ocasionado que los procesos en la producción de alimentos estén orientados a disminuir costos y a reemplazar insumos naturales por productos artificiales y combinaciones sintéticas…
…(and additionally) furthermore adding excessive quantities of sugar, sodium and fat that don’t supply the nutritional needs of the average population.
…adicionando además cantidades exageradas de azúcar, sodio, y grasa que no suplen las necesidades nutricionales de la población promedio.
Secondly, I think that the aggressive marketing strategies of the multinational companies that are producing this food globally are including tactics of emotional manipulation in order to increase their sales…
En segundo lugar, pienso que las estrategias agresivas de mercadeo de las compañías multinacionales que producen estos alimentos a nivel global, están incluyendo tácticas de manipulación emocional para aumentar sus ventas,
As a result (thanks to that), they are creating a pattern of mass behavior through the consumption of highly toxic food and offering it in excessive amounts in order to force consumers to dramatically increase their daily food intake (amount of food).
y gracias a ello, están creando un patrón de comportamiento masivo de consumo de alimentos altamente tóxicos, ofreciéndolos en cantidades desmesuradas para obligar a los consumidores a aumentar drásticamente su cantidad diaria de alimento.
(This is a significant problem) That, added to the fact that these industries are indoctrinating consumers into thinking they need irrational amounts of animal protein and dairy products to meet the physiological needs of the human body for the normal development of its functions.
(Es un problema importante/Se trata de un grave problema) Esto, sumado a que este tipo de industrias está adoctrinando a los consumidores para que piensen que necesitan cantidades irracionales de proteína animal y de productos derivados de la leche para poder satisfacer las necesidades fisiológicas del cuerpo humano para el normal desarrollo de sus funciones.
Thirdly, I think that both in Colombia as well as in/around the entire world, corporations that produce these products are absolutely clear that the most important elements within the framework of corporate governance are the links with the public sector.
En tercer lugar, pienso que tanto en Colombia, como en el mundo entero, las corporaciones que producen esos productos tienen absolutamente claro que lo más importante dentro del esquema de gobierno corporativo son los enlaces con el sector público.
Lawyers/lobbyists who go to Congress or to the food regulatory agencies and prevent laws to amend the rules relating to the production and marketing of food, are paying huge sums of money, supporting political candidates, making millions of dollars worth of donations and are interfering with the construction of these laws and regulatory policies.
Los abogados/cabilderos que van al Congreso o a los organismos de regulación de alimentos, e impiden que se aprueben leyes orientadas a modificar las normas relacionadas con la producción y comercialización de alimentos, pagando enormes sumas de dinero, apoyando candidatos políticos, haciendo donaciones millonarias e interfiriendo en la construcción de esas leyes y políticas de regulación.
I think that because of this, we are allowing a sick society to grow(allowing it to grow a sick society), with serious physical and mental health problems and creating a financial impact on the health sector…
Pienso que gracias a eso, estamos permitiendo que crezca una sociedad enferma, con graves problemas de salud física y mental y creando un impacto financiero en el sector de la salud…
…because in the end, who will cover the costs of care, treatments, surgeries and medicines to address such a large percentage of society? They will be that same citizens themselves through the public budget.
…porque al final, quienes van a cubrir los costos de atención, tratamientos, cirugías y medicamentos para atender un porcentaje tan alto de la sociedad, van a ser los mismos ciudadanos a través del presupuesto público.
Whenever governments (propose a discussion about) want to talk about being overweight (obesity) or the poor nutrition of the global population, the industry once again finds an opportunity to launch new products that invade the market and do not change anything in the pattern of people’s consumer behavior.
Cada vez que los gobiernos proponen una discusión sobre el sobrepeso o la mala nutrición de la población a nivel global, la industria encuentra nuevamente una oportunidad para lanzar nuevos productos que invaden el mercado y que no cambian en nada el patrón de comportamiento de consumo de las personas.
Additionally, I think there is a moral discussion that society needs to have (hear) about animal abuse and the unsanitary conditions of the meat industry and dairy products.
Adicionalmente, creo que hay una discusión moral que la sociedad necesita escuchar con respecto al maltrato animal y a las condiciones insalubres de la industria de la carne y los productos derivados de la leche.
Most of the academic resources that I have reviewed consulted say that 70% of the world’s production of soybeans, corn, and other grains is intended for the consumption of these animals, which represents a terrifying environmental impact.
