Royalist troops at Montmedy. 10,000 soldiers under General Francois Bouille.
What does Louis’ document - Declaration to the French People - being left behind in the Tuileries indicate?
That his personal goal was a return to the concessions and compromises contained in the declaration of the Third estate on 23 June 1789.
When did the royal flight to Vareenes occur?
During the night of 20-21 June.
How far did they get in their attempted escape from Paris?
Louis, his queen Marie Antoinette, and their immediate family, only escaped as far as the small town of Vareenes where they were arrested.
What time did they make their escape from the Palace?
Midnight.
Who successfully escaped?
The king’s brother, fled a different route, successfully escaped and spent the French Revolution in exile, later returning and crowned King Louis XVIII.
Why was the royal family thwarted in their escape attempt?

- Key figure Marie Antoinettes brother - Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II.
- Leopold and Fredrick William issued Declaration of Pillnitz which declared the interest of the monarchs of Europe and threatened consequence if anyone was to befall them.

Austria, voting for war on 20 April 1792.
Why was the royal family executed? The enemy within:
- Whilst revolutionary government frantically raised troops, Prussian-Austrian army assembled under the Duke of Brunswick assembled at Coblenz on the Rhine.
