The Catholic Church had a status subordinate to the state.

Declaration of the Clergy of France (1682) - the monarch could assemble Church councils and make laws and regulations touching ecclesiastical matters.
What did the Edict of Versailles outline?
Non-Catholics could openly practice their religion as well as have legal and civil status. Included marriage without conversion.

Tithes were abolished.

Catholic property nationalised and used as backing for assignat.

Monastic vows forbidden and congregations dissolved unless it taught children or nursed the sick.

July 12th 1790 - Attempt to reorganise Roman Catholic Church on national basis.
What did it outline?
Clergy could not commit to anything outside of France, specifically the Papacy.
Bishops and priests had to be elected by their congregation.
What was the impact of the constitution?
The schism within the French Church made many devout Catholics turn towards Revolution.
