The Excretory System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the excretory system?
To remove excess and unwanted substances from the body.
What is the urinary tract responsible for?
Filtering waste materials out of the blood and excreting these materials through urine
Organs in the urinary tract (4)
kidneys
ureters
bladder
urethra.
Role of the kidneys (3)
- Filter blood
- Reabsorb the useful substances within the filtrate
- Secrete unwanted materials
How is blood delivered to the kidneys?
Renal arteries
How much of a person’s blood volume can a kidney hold at a time? (%)
25%
What can the renal artery be broken down into?
Nephrons
How many nephrons does a kidney contain?
Millions
What are the capillaries that deliver blood to the nephron called?
Afferent capillaries
What are the capillaries that take away blood from the nephrons called?
Efferent capillaries
Two distinct regions of the kidney
- Cortex (on the outside)
- Medulla (on the inside)
Bowman Capsule’s function
Filtration
Proximal
convoluted tubule function
Reabsorption and secretion
Loop of Henle function
- Reabsorption of water
- Secretion of amino acids
Distal convoluted
tubule function
Optional reabsorption: Ions, water
Secretion: Urines, Ions, Ammonia, Toxins
