The Endocrine System Flashcards
What are hormones?
Hormones are the messages of the endocrine system which are transmitted by chemicals
Where is the pituitary gland located and what does it do?
In the forebrain
Provides link between the endocrine and nervous system
What are the various hormones produced by the pituitary glandm their target organs and functions?
Growth hormone (GH)- liver Promotes the growth of bones in legs and arms
Follicle stimulating hormone(FSH)- (ovaries) Promote eggs to mature and triggers the release of oestrogen from the ovaries
Luteinising hormone(LH)- (ovaries) Stimulates the release of an egg from the ovaries
Anti- Diurectic hormone(ADH)- (kidney) Regulates the reabsorbtion of water in the blood in the kidney.
ATCH- (kidney)- stimulates the adrenal gland to produce cortisol which controls the metabolism of fat, protein and carbohydrates.
What hormone does the adrenal gland produce and what is itf effects on the body?
Adrenaline- Increase the rate of heartbeat
Increase blood pressure
Increase the flow of blood in the muscles
Raise blood glucose level
What hormone does the thyroid gland produce and what is the function?
It produces thyroxine and it controls the rate of metabolism.
What hormones does the pancreas produce?
Insulin and Glucogan
Insulin- lower blood glucose level
Glucogan- raises blood glucose level
What hormones do the ovaries and testes produce?
The ovaries produce oestrogen and progesterone and the testes produce tetestrorone.
Differentiate between the endocrine and nervous system
Nervous system consists of nerve impulses conducted by neurons from one organ to another while the other consista of endocrine systems that secretes chemical messengers. hormones are directed directly into the blood stream
Nerve impules are fast and short lasting while hormones are longer lasting
The nervous impulses arent speceficof their action while hormones are highly specefic
