Cell specialization and Level of organization Flashcards
What is the level of organization?
cells- tissue-organs-organ system-organisms
What are 2 organ systems in plants?
Transpiration system and Translocation system
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from plants
What is translocation?
The movement of sugar in the plant.
What is Xylem
Transport water and minerals inside the plant.
What is Phloem?
Transport sugar and amino acids inside the plant.
What is cell specialization?
When cells become specifically adapted to carry out one particular function.
Give examples of 3 specialized animal cell
egg cell, sperm cell, red blood cell
Give 3 examples of 3 specialized plant cell
Root hair cell
Palisade cell
Guard cell
Characteristics of the red blood cell
Contains no nucleus
Oxygen binds to a red pigment called haemoglobin
What is the function of the red blood cell?
To transport oxygen around the body
What is the function of the white blood cell?
The protect the body against diseases/infections
What is the function of the nerve cell?
Transfer information around the body in the form of an electric impulse.
What is the function of the egg cell?
To join with the sperm cell during fertilization to form an embryo with will eventually grow into a new organism.
What is the function of the sperm cell?
Contains genetic information needed to fertilize the egg cell in order to produce an offspring.
