The Electronic Media (INC) Flashcards
The Internet
A relatively new phenomenon – did not take off until the latter half of the 1990s.
The Internet evolved along with computer technology. As computers moved from text based operating systems to object oriented operating systems, the Internet evolved into a more visual form of communication.
Unlike radio, television and film, the Internet can be an interactive from of communication.
The Internet is also more open and democratic. Anyone with access to the technology can post messages, images, and video on the Internet
Problems with the internet
The Internet can be addictive.
Identity theft can occur over the Internet. Be careful who you give your personal information to.
Web sites are becoming more graphics intensive, and users need to upgrade their machines so that they have sufficient bandwidth and capacity to load images and video.
Bullying can occur over the Internet
Television
Television technology existed in the 1930s, but broadcasts did not begin until the late 1940s in the US and early 1950s in Canada.
The CBC was Canada’s first television network. The CTV network got started in the latter half of the 1960s, and the Global network got started in the mid 1980s.
CBC started broadcasting programs in colour in 1967.
Saskatoon did not get a second TV channel until 1971.
Cable TV arrived in Saskatoon around 1978. Early cable TV signals came from US network affiliates in Williston, North Dakota.
In the mid 1980s, the cable company switched to Detroit as a source of US programming.
Today, US signals originate from Detroit, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Spokane, Rochester, and Los Angeles. There are also several specialty cable channels owned by networks and media conglomerates
Problems with TV
Heavy viewers are more likely to overestimate the amount of violence that occurs in society, they overestimate the number of people who have professional jobs, and they learn to accept stereotypical male and female roles (Gerbner and Gross, 1976).
Television give the illusion of experience, but it is really a one-way form of communication.
Television is an expensive medium of communication and is heavily reliant on advertising. Programs are more glamourous and sensational to keep people watching, and the main reason to keep them watching is that they will see the commercials.
Television acts like a filter. The images and messages are only those that programmers want you to see and hear
