The Life Course
Early childhood (0-5 years) Late childhood (6-12 years) Adolescence (13-19 years) Early adulthood (20-39 years) Middle age (40-64 years) Old age (65 +) Death
birth cohort
all of the people who are born during a given period of time and therefore experience historical events at the same point in their lives. Those who grew up during the Depression are often very concerned with accumulating wealthy and “saving it for a rainy day”
young adults
completed schooling, work vs kids crisis
later adulthood
between 40 and 60, increased recognition of one’s declining health as first signs of physical aging occur; empty nest syndrome is largely a myth (in fact, transition from work to retirement is more difficult), midlife crisis because of erectile dysfunction
old age
western definition –> age, not capability; retirement
gerontology
during late middle age, people usually confront their own declining health and the death of their parents
dying trajectories
the courses that dying takes in both social and psychological sense.
