preparatory stage
(birth to age three): children imitate what they see, while at the same time they try to please their parents and other family members. Through positive/negative reinforcement, children devlop I, but me is still forming in background
play stage
(ages three to five): learn a great deal about themselves/socety through play. role playing begins during this period (ie: pretending to be athletes, entertainers, workers, etc) and learning language. Me is still devloping because children still want to recieve postivie reinforcement from their sig. others. Language must be mastered before sense of self can emerge to accurately communicate their thoughts/feelings
game stage
(elementary school years): learning how to take on multiple roles and playing a particular role in a group setting (eg playing a position on a sports team), primary socialization occurs
primary socialization
occurs when people learn the attitudes, values, and appropriate behaviours for individuals in their culture, gaining sense of self as unique individual
secondary socialization
in early adolescence and beyond, follows primary socialization and occurs through participation in more specific groups with defined roles and expectations (like part time jobs, volunteering etc)
