Disease and Disability (INC) Flashcards
chronic diseases
Chronic diseases are long term or lifelong illnesses that may develop gradually or may be something people are born with.
Not all chronic diseases are fatal if they are treated properly. For example, some people with allergies or respiratory diseases can live a long time if they have access to treatment
acute diseases
Acute diseases are diseases that strike suddenly and can cause dramatic incapacitation or death.
Some of these diseases have been brought under control, such as measles, typhoid, polio, and malaria.
However, other diseases have emerged, such as AIDS, SARS, and West Nile virus, all of which have spread due to increased travel. Some of the worst diseases can be only a jet flight away.
Antibiotic resistant diseases are also a growing problem, especially in areas where living conditions are overcrowded and unsanitary
degenerative diseases
Degenerative diseases are usually associated with aging but also may be inherited, acquired due to hazardous working or living conditions, or may be the result of poor diet and lifestyle choices.
Examples of degenerative diseases include cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease
