I: spontaneous, creative, impulsive, often unpredictable
Me: second level of consciousness, socialized element of self, the part of consciousness that thinks about how to behave so that, for example, you don’t embarrass yourself. helps control the spontaneous impluses of the I
significant other
significant others: people we want to impress or gain approval
generalized other
not any one specific person but a compilation of attributes that we associate with the average member of society. represents the recognition that other members of society behave within certain socially accepted guidelines and rules. understanding the generalized other and how it would feel to behave in certain situations gives an individual a reference point for proper and expected behaviours.
