the easter vigil (pashcal vigil) Flashcards
liturgical tradition
a ritual completed in a set way, usually in a church.
what does it celebrate?
- the resurrection of jesus.
(but is also when new members are baptized into the church or current members are given a chance to renew their baptismal vows).
the service of light (1/4)
a fire is lit and blessed. the paschal candle is then lit with the fire and carried in procession through the church with the priest saying /the light of christ’ 3 times and the congregation replying ‘thanks be to god’.
everyone has a candle that is lit from the paschal candle.
easter hymn is sung.
liturgy of the word of god (2/4)
part where scripture is read. it follows the same pattern that is usually followed in sunday eucharist but with extra old testament readings.
liturgy of the initiation (3/4)
time when some are baptised. sometimes confirmation will occur.
ALL those present renew their baptismal promises.
liturgy of the eucharist (3/4)
the eucharist then continues, ending with many repetitions of ‘alleluia’.
