salvation: law, grace and spirit Flashcards
reconcillation
a return to friendly relations.
atonement
the reconciliation of God and mankind through jesus.
grace
God’s unconditional love for everyone.
why could Jesus take away the sins of the world?
he had no sins - he was the perfect human.
salvation
BEING SAVED:
following the mistake made by adam and eve, which led to evil entering the world, God offered salvation.
htis means human souls can be saved from eternal punishment (or separation from God) and are allowed to enter heaven (and be in the presence of God).
salvation by law
some believe that people can achieve salvation by following God’s teachings and carrying out good deeds that will please God.
e.g. caring for those who are less fortunate or giving to charity.
salvation by grace
grace is the unconditional love that God has for everyone. salvation cannot be earned.
it can be achieved by believing in God and his son jesus.
some believe belief in Jesus is enough to get you in heaven.
→ this belief is supported by St Paul, who writes: “all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24)
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith … it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)
‘lamb of God’
(referring to the sacrifices in the old testament). this is because like a lamb, which would traditionally have been sacrificed, he died to make up for the sins of humanity.
salvation by holy spirit
holy spirit helps christians to follow the teachings of God, and God recognises that everyone will sin but that they will “turn to God in repentance (Acts 20:21)”. this means that, despite sinning, humans will try to make amends and ask for forgiveness by agreeing that God exists.
original sin
belief human nature is flawed due to the fall (adam & eve disobeying god) and that we all have an inherent desire to sin.
