The Ear - Physics Flashcards
1
Q
Label a diagram of the ear.
A
See notes.
2
Q
How is hearing damage caused?
A
Exposure to loud noises causes the tiny hairs in the ear to break and clump together. This damage is permanent and causes severe hearing damage.
3
Q
How can you prevent hearing damage?
A
- Wear hearing protection such as earplugs and earmuffs.
- Take breaks between exposure to loud noises.
- Limit long-term exposure to high-intensity noise.
4
Q
What is a cochlear implant?
A
An implant in the ear and on the side of the head. The bit on the side of the head detects and interprets sounds, and then sends signals to the auditory nerve, which in turn sends information to the brain. It can help the profoundly deaf to hear.

Q
Who is involved in the production of the cochlear implant?
A
Manufacturer, surgeon, speech therapist, engineer, scientist, designer.
