Interactions Between Species - Ecosystems Flashcards
What is an ecological niche?
An ecological niche is where a species lives within an ecosystem, which includes its habitat, nutrition, and relationships.
What is competition?
The struggle between organisms for food, shelter and other resources.
What are the two types of competition? What is the difference?
Interspecific- between organisms of the same species.
Intraspecific- between organisms of different species.
What is a predator-prey relationship?
When one species kills and eats another species.
What is a herbivore-plant relationship?
This is when a species of herbivore eats a certain species of plant.
What is parasitism?
This is when one species lives on or in another, from which it obtains food, shelter and other needs.
What are some examples of parasitism?
Leeches, ticks, fleas.
What is mutualism?
This is an interaction between two species from which both species benefit.
What are some examples of mutualism?
Digestive bacteria in the stomach, oxepeckers and rhinos, protozoans and termites.
What is commensalism?
A relationship between two species in which one benefits and one is unaffected.
What are some examples of commensalism?
Remora fish and sharks, cattle egrets and cattle.
