Population - Ecosystems Flashcards
What is the formula for calculating population growth?
Growth rate=(birth rate+immigration) - (death rate+emigration)
What factors affect population?
Disease, habitat size, food and water availability, male to female ratio, birth rate, death rate, immigration, emigration, predators.
What are some factors that would cause an increase in population?
More food and water, less predators, bigger habitat, larger birth rate, immigration.
What are some factors that would cause a decrease in population?
Less food and water, disease, more predators, smaller habitat, emigration, higher death rate.
What is carrying capacity?
The maximum number of up individuals that a particular are can sustain.
What happens when a population reaches carrying capacity?
It goes into a state of equilibrium, where the birth rate and death rate cancel each other out, and there is zero population growth.
