The ear Flashcards
Pinna
outer flap, that directs sound waves to auditory canal
Auditory canal
channel carrying sound waves to the eardrum
(also specializes in producing ear wax to trap invading particles
Tympanic membrane
eardrum
Ossicles
amplifies sound waves from tympanic membran(eardrum) to the oval window by 3 small bones
What are the 3 small bones in the ossicles and what are their latin names
Malleus(hammer), incus(anvil), stapes(stirrup)
Oval window
smaller then eardrums and amplifies sound
Eustachian tube
air filled tube, that equalizes pressure between internal and external ear. Also drains excess fluid to nasal cavity
Vestibule
connected to middle ear by oval window, contains two small sacs (utricle and saccule) which are involved in head balance
Semicircular canals
3 fluid filled canals, that help the body balance
Cochlea
coiled shell, lined with hair cells that respond to frequencies and convert them to nerve impulse
Auditory nerve
transmits signal to CNS
oval window
triggers waves in fluid
within the inner ear to the cochlea; which converts the
waves to electrical impulses.
organ of corti
primary sound receptor in the cochlea.
Composed of 1 inner row and 3 outer rows of hair cells.
what is the sequence of sound waves in the ear
Sound wave → tympanic membrane (eardrum) → 3 bones of middle ear (ossicles) → oval
window → organ of corti (cochlea) → round window → auditory neve → temporal lobe
Basilar membrane
where hair cells are attached to
Tectorial membrane
far ends of the stereocilia
