Male reproductive system Flashcards
Importance of reproduction
Sexual reproduction is the fusion of male and female sex hormones
Gonads(testes and ovaries)
Are the organs that produce reproductive cells: sperm in males and eggs in females
Sexual Reproduction
Involves the fusion of two specialized sex cells( a sperm cell and egg cell) That fusion is called ferilization– which resulted in a zygote
Fertilization
The joining of male and female gametes to form a cingle cell that contains 23 chromosomes from each parent
Gamete
male or female reproductive cell
Zygote
a cell formed by the union of two gametes– product of fertilization
– that cell will divide many times(mitosis) to form a blastocyst
Testes
two male gonads(balls)
-composed of long coiled tubes called seminefrous tubuleswhere sperm is produces
Scrotum
Sac containing testes
-It regulates the temperature of the testes(sperm production is most successful as 35 degrees celcius
Spermatogenesis
Process of sperm cells formation which occurs in the seminiferous tubules(Sertolie cells)
Sertoli cells and intersitial cells
Sertoli cells secrete chemicals required for nourishment and development of sperm cells– and makes inhinbin
Inhibin
Inhibin plays a key role in a negative feedback loop with the pituitary gland to control Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) levels.
FSH
Follicle stimulating hormone- Responsible for stimulating sperm production in the seminiferous tubules
LH
LH release is controlled by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus.
In males, swtimulates interstitial cells to produce testosterone
In females, triggers release of an egg
Sperm Route
1.Epididymis
2. Vas Deferens
3. Ejaculatory Duct
4. Urethra
Semen
Fluid composed of sperm and ejaculatory fluid
Erection
Erectile tissue fills with blood by stimulation of parasympathetic nerve
Epididymus
Sperm from the testes are transported to this duct where the sperm become mature and motile(capable of motion)
Vas deferens
storage duct connected to epidiymus which leads to the penis via the ejaculatory duct
Ejaculatory ducts
tube connecting the vas deferens to the penis
Seminal vesicles
-produces a sugar called fructose, which provides energy and sperm(male)
Prostate Gland
Produces alkaline fluid that neutralizes the acidity of the vagine ensuring the survival of the sperm
Cowper glands(bulbourethra)
Secretes mucus like fluid to protect sperm from acidic vagina
Sperm structure
-Acrosome
-Midpiece
-Tail(Flagellum)
Acrosome
Cap like structure filled with enzymes that help sperm penetrate the eggs protective layer
NUCLEUS- contains 23 chromosomes from each parent
