Menstruall Cycle Flashcards
What is the Menstrual Cycle
A 28 day cycle that prepares the female body for pregnancy, it consists of two interconnected cycles(Ovarian cycle and Uterine Cycle)
What is the ovarian cycle
The Ovarian cycle controls the growth, maturation and release of an egg
What are the phases of the ovarian cycle
- Follicular phase(Day 1-14)
- Ovulation(Day14)
- Luteul Phase(15-28)
What are the phases of the uterine cycle
- Flow Phase(Days 1-5)-Period
- Proliferative Phase (Days6-13)
3.Ovulation(day 14) - Secretory Phase(15-28)
Follicular Phase(Days 1-13)
FSH released by AP, that FSH stimulates follicles to mature and then estrogen is released. High levels of estrogen send negative feedback to AP but also cause sudden release of GnRH which stimulates the release of LH from AP and increase in LH trigger ovulation(Follicle bursts releasing an ovum)
Ovulation phase(Day 14)
LH increase triggers the release of an ovum frrom the follicle into the oviduct(fallopian tube)
Luteul Phase(15-28)
LH causes follicle to devlope into a corpus luteum which secretes progesterone. High levels of progesterone send feedback to AP to inhibit the FSH and LH production. Corpus luteum degenerates leading to low levels of progesterone, those low levels of the hormones in blood cause AP to increse secretiong of FSH and LH
Menstrual Phase(days 1-5)
-Shedding the endometrium and egg(menstruation)
Proliferative Phase(6-13)
-Estrogen from the growing follicle rebuilds the endometrium
-Development of follicles in ovary
Ovulation(Day14)
Ovum is released and uterine lining continures to thicken(prepares for a possible implantation)
Secretory Phase(Day15-28)
Corpus luteum forms and produces estrogen which thickens endometrium
Endometrium
The endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus, and its main function is to support a fertilized egg and nurture early pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancy
When implantation happens somwhere that isnt the uterus
What affects do estrogen and progestrone have on the endometrium
Estrogen thickens the endometrium and progesterone stabilizes the endometrium and prevents further shedding, if pregnancy doesnt occur estrogen and progesterone levels decrease leading to shedding of endometrium
