Hormones of reproduction Flashcards
(Males)Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone(GnRH)
Produced by the hypothalamus
-stimulates the release of FSH and LH from pituitary gland
FSH(males)
Produced in the Anterior pituitary, stimulates sperm production in seminiferous tubules
LH(males)
Produced in the anterior pituitary, stimulates interstitial cells to produce testosterone
Inhibin
Produced in steroli cells, inhibits FSH production to regulate sperm production
Testosterone
Produced in the Testes(interstitial cells), developes sperm, male traits and sex drive
Hormonal feedback loop in males
Release of GnRH from hypothalamus triggers release of FSH and LH from A.pituitary. FSH stimulates sperm production and LH stimulates the release of testosterone from interstitial cells
Andropause
Gradual decline in testosterone levels after 40 years
-Fatigue, depression, muscle loss, prostate growth
GnRH(female)
Produced in hypothalamus, activates the pituitaru to release FSH and LH
FSH(female)
Produced in the anterior pituitary, stimulates follicle growth in ovaries
LH
Produced in anterior pituitary, triggers ovulation(egg release) and maintains corpus luteum
Estrogen
Produced in ovaries(Follicle cells), developes secondary sex traits and thickens the uterine lining
Progesterone
produced in ovaries(corpus luteum), Maintains pregnancy, inhibits ovulation and prevents uterine contractions
Inhibin
produced in ovary, inhibits FSH production to prevent multiple ovulations
