Female Reproduction system Flashcards
Responsibilities for the female reproductive system
- producing eggs through Oogenesis
- facilitating fertilization by transporting eggs to site where sperm can meet them
- supporting oregnancy
4.giving birth
Ovaries
Hold and release eggs(ovum) and secrete estrogen and progesterone
Fallopian tubes(oviduct)
Carry the egg towards the uterus; site of fertilization
Uterus
Provide nurturing enviroment for embryo development
Vagina
the birth canal and site of sperm entry
Cervix
narrow opening between uterus & vagina; dialates during childbirth
What is the uterus composed of
two major tissue, myometrium, and endometrium
endometrium
inner lining that provides nourishment fir the developing embryo
myometrium
muscular outer layer that provides support for the developing embryo and pushes baby out birth canal
Oogenesis
process of female gametes production
Ovulation
Ovulation is the process where a mature egg (ovum) is released from a follicle in the ovary into the fallopian tube(oviduct)
Follicle
specialized cell structure within the ovaries that contain and ovum(egg) that will be released
menopause
end of fertility
Implantation
the process were a fertilized egge(zygote) attaches to the uterine lining(endometrium) to begin pregnancy
Progesterone
female sex hormone produced first by the corpus luteum of the ovary to prepare the uterus for the fertilized egg and later by the placenta to maintain pregnancy
Corpus luteum
gland like structure that developes from a follicle that has matured and released its egg; it produces progesterone
