The Digestive System Flashcards
What happens in the mouth?
Your teeth chew the food and break it down while the amylase digests starch into glucose.
Whats peristalsis?
Muscular contractions push the food down the esophagus.
What happens in the stomach?
The muscular walls of the stomach help churn the food and also secrete hydrochloric acids that break down the food
What happens in the small intestine?
More enzymes are added to the food like lipase protease and amylase. The food molecules are now small enough to pass through the walls and into the bloodstream.
Whats bile?
Made in the liver, stored in the gall bladder and is released into the small intestine. (Its an emulsifier) It breaks down large fat droplets into small droplets.
How’s the small intestine adapted for its role?
Large surface area provided by villi and micro villi.
Lots of capillaries.
Thin wall.
Lacteals which absorb fat.
What does the large intestine do?
The left over undigestible food travels here.
Water is reabsorbed into the blood here.
