Biological Resources Flashcards
Why does using a greenhouse increase the crop yield?
Plants need moisture, warmth and light to grow. A greenhouse stabilizes the growing environment by buffering the ambient temperature and protecting the plants from extreme cold.
How do fertilizers increase crop yield?
Adding fertilizers replaces leached or lost nitrates and minerals.
What are advantages and disadvantages of pesticides?
Effective at killing pests
Readily availible
Easy to use
Expensive
Persistent (Long time to decompose)
Stored in tissue of living organisms (Bioaccumulation)
Can kill useful species
How is yogurt made?
Lactobacillus bulgaricus is used. Respires anaerobically breaking down lactose, the sugar found in yogurt into lactic acid. This takes place in a fermenter.
Whats a fermenter?
A vessel containing microorganisms that are involved in fermentation reactions.
What are the suitable conditions in a fermenter?
Nutrients, a controlled supply to feed the microorganisms.
Air supply, Provides O2 for aerobic respiration.
Agitation, microorganisms constantly stirred to give more exposure to nutrients and to reduce temperature.
Whats selective breeding?
The process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular traits.
