Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are the limiting factors in photosynthesis?
Temperature, CO2 and light intensity
How are leaves evolved for photosynthesis?
Large surface area, thin and flat.
What does the waxy cuticle do in leaves?
Prevents transpiration. (Loss of water vapor from leaf)
What does the upper epidermis do?
Transparent and allows light to enter leaf.
What does the palisade mesophyll do?
Contains lots of chloroplast which absorb light during photosynthesis.
What does the spongy mesophyll do?
Air spaces allows gases like O2 and CO2 to diffuse. Also contains the vein.
Whats the vein contain?
The xylem which brings water to the leaf, and the phloem that brings sugar away from the leaf.
What are the stomata?
Allows CO2 into the leaf and O2 and water to leave the leaf.
What do the gaurd cells do?
They control the opening and closing of the stomata.
What do the guard cells do?
They control the opening and closing of the stomata.
How are minerals absorbed by the roots?
Absorbed by active transport into the root hair cell.
Whats nitrate used for in plants?
Used to make proteins.
Whats magnesium used to make in plants?
Used to make chlorophyll.
What does a magnesium deficiency look like?
Yellow leaves
What does a nitrate deficiency look like?
Stunt of growth
