What is the constitution?
The constitution is a set of rules and laws that applies to every South African citizen, even the president. No other law or government action can override the constitutional laws. In 1994 SA needed to write a new constitution to guide us as a democracy. on the 4 Dec. 1996, The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa was approved by the Constitutional Court but only took affect on the 4 February 1997.
What is the constitutional court?
The highest court of the land. Made up of 11 Judges, one head Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice.
How does the constitutional court protect democracy?
• Ensures that everyones rights are protected, that no-one is being deprived
of their rights.
• Gives everyone a chance to speak without the worry of fearfulness,
judgement or prejudice.
