What is a democracy?
A democracy is a system of government any citizen over the age of 18 can vote to elect their leaders. People have a say in how their country is ruled. Democracy is the freedom of choice, and it plays a very big role in South Africa.
What is a political party?
A political party is a group of people who share ideas on how they think a country should be run.
What does a political party use to promote themselves and make the citizens of a country know what they stand for?
They use speeches and posters. They work hard to get the people of the country to know about them, and their ideas and plans for the country so that people will vote for them.
Give information about the leading political party.
The ANC (the African National Congress), led by Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa. Most people vote for them because Nelson Mandela used to lead them when he was alive.

What are elections?
The action of a citizen voting for its government.
Who runs the elections (full name)?
IEC (Independent Electoral Commission)
What do the people who run the elections do?
They make sure that elections are free and fair, and ensure that there is no cheating or wrong-doing. They also organise the elections.
What does IEC stand for?
Independent Electoral Commission.
What do citizens vote on?
A ballot paper.
What is it called when voting is done in secret?
A secret ballot.
