The Circulatory system Flashcards
1
Q
properties of a red blood cell
A
- carries oxygen from the lungs to the blood
- have no nucleus which creates more room for oxygen
- their shape is a biconcave shape for more surface area
- In the lungs, oxygen binds to haemoglobin ( red pigment) to form oxyhaemoglobin. this then splits in the body tissues to release oxygen to cells
2
Q
properties of white blood cells
A
- some can change shape to gobble up unwanted microorganisms- phagocytosis
- some produce antibodies to fight microorganisms and antitoxins to eat up the toxins produced
- has a nucleus
3
Q
properties of platelets
A
- no nucleus
- help to clot a wound
- lack of platelets cause excessive bleeding and bruising
4
Q
properties of plasma
A
- contains glucose and amino acids
- carries red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
- co2
- urea
- hormones
- protein
