Circulatory system blood vessels Flashcards
1
Q
three types of blood vessels
A
capillaries, arteries, veins
2
Q
What do arteries
A
Carry blood away from the heart
3
Q
What do veins do
A
Carry blood to the heart
4
Q
What do Capillaries do
A
involved in the exchange of materials at tissues
5
Q
How are arteries adapted
A
- the walls are strong and elastic as the blood gets pumped out at a high pressure
- The walls are thick compared to the lumen
- contain thick layers of muscle to make them strong
- they have elastic fibres which allow them to stretch and spring back
6
Q
How are capillaries adapted
A
- tiny and carry blood really close to every cell to exchange substances with them
- have permeable walls so substances can diffuse in and out
- They supply food and water and take out co2
- Their walls are only one cell thick to increase the rate of diffusion
7
Q
How are veins adapted
A
- have thinner walls than arteries as the blood is pumped out a lower pressure
- The lumen is bigger to help the blood flow
- they have valves to help the blood flow in the right direction
