Help to keep your arteries open
What is coronary heart disease
the coronary arteries that supply the blood to the muscle from the heart gets blocked by layers of fatty material. This causes the arteries to become narrow so blood is restricted and there is a lack of oxygen to the heart muscle. This can causes a heart attack
How do stents work
-they are tubes that are inserted into your arteries. This helps to keep them open so blood can pass through to the heart muscles to help keep their heart beating
Advantages for stents
- Effective for a long time
- recovery time for surgery is quick
Disadvantages for stents
- Increases the chance of infection
- risk of patients developing a blood clot near the stent
What do statins do
reduce the cholesterol in the blood
What is cholesterol
A lipid essential for your body. Too much LDL cholesterol can lead to coronary heart disease
How do statins work
they are drugs that can reduce the amount of LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream which slows down the rate of fatty deposits forming
Advantages for statin
- reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks
- increases HDL cholesterol which a good
- could also prevent other diseases
Disadvantages for statin
- long term so you have to take it regularly and some can forget
- some side effects are serious like kidney failure, heart disease, and memory loss
- takes time for the effect to kick in
