What is an artificial heart and how does it work
A
- mechanical device that pumps blood for a person whose heart has failed
- usually only temporary until a donor is found but some do have one permanently

Advantages for artificial hearts
A
- less likely to e rejected by the body’s immune system than a donor heart as they are made from metal or plastics

disadvantages for artificial hearts
A
- surgery can lead to excessive bleeding and infection
- electrical motor could fail which could lead to blood clots and strokes so the patient has to take drugs to stop this from happening which can cause problems with bleeding if they are hurt

What is a faulty heart valve
A
This is when the valve tissue begins to stiffen so it doesn’t open properly or a valve can become leaky and the blood flows in both direction and the blood doesn’t circulate like normal

A
- less drastic procedure than a transplant

A
- still the risk of blood clots

a solution used to replace the lost volume of blood cells
