They operated their own law courts in order to try crimes like breaches of doctrines.

In the 15th century despite the medieval kings trying to weaken the church court’s independent power.
What privileges were bishops and abbots given?
They could sit in the House of Lords. Churchmen were more literate so had skills as administrators.
Who did H7 promote to Archbishop of Canterbury?
Bishop John Morton. He was later appointed to Lord Chancellor which had an important role in advising the king.
What did Henry think about the church?
He thought that the church could be used as a powerful ally if his claim to the throne was to be challenged.
