When was the first rebellion against Henry?
Easter 1486. It involved Lord Lovell and the Staffords.
Who led this rebellion? (lord lovell and staffords)
Francis Viscount Lovell and Humphrey Stafford and Thomas Stafford.
What were their intentions? (lord lovell and staffords)
To cause a rebellion in North Ruding of Yorkshire. Stafford attempted to get support in the Midlands where there was Yorkist support.
Did they have any foreign support? (lovell and staffords)
Lovell fled to Margaret of Burgundy.
How was Henry able to overcome the threat? (lovell and staffords)
1) henry had mass support in Worcester (where rebellion had risen)
2) he had used spied to monitor Yorkist supporters and acted quickly and decisively against the threat.
3) He knew that Lovell and Staffords were out of sanctuary. They went into sanctuary after BoB
4) Lovell escaped and Humphrey was executed. Thomas was pardoned.
What was Lambert Simnell told to do?
He was told to impersonate the Earl of Warwick, who had been arrested during the BoB and hadn’t been seen for a year. by Richard Symonds.
What foreign support did Simnell have?
Margaret of Burgundy (sister of RIII). Trading rights had been removed as she gathered 2000 mercenaries and set sail for Ireland.
What English support did Simnell have?
John de la Pole (Earl of Lincoln) who had begun to conspire against HVII. Little support from the north.
What was the quality of leadership? Simnell
Their army marched for 12 days in the north, but they gained no support. They were outnumbered.
How did Henry overcome the threat? Simnell
1) He had a larger, better equiped and trained force.
2) He brought the real Earl of Lincoln to show everyone that Simnell was an imposter.
3) It ended in a battle, The Battle of Stoke which was the ‘last battle of the wars of the roses) and Simnell was given a position in the king’s kitchen
What were the consequences of this rebellion? simnell
Simnell was given a position in the king’s kitchen, lincoln died in the battle, symonds was imprisoned in the bishop’s prison for life.
Who was Perkin Warbeck?
He was a pretender to the throne that was active from 1491-1499.
What foreign support did warbeck have?
1) Margaret of Burgundy, who believed that warbeck was her nephew back from the dead. Maximilian, HRE.
2) King James IV who believed his claim was genuine and agreed to invade England in 1497. However, warbeck didn’t like how the scots invaded and refused to carry on with them.
3) Charles VIII of France recognised Warbeck’s claim and decided to welcome him in court. He used warbeck as a means to embarrass Henry to annex Brittany.
Who supposedly had a hand in the warbeck conspiracy?
Sir William Stanley who was the first to greet Edward IV after he returned from exile in March 1471.
Who planned to murder HVII? warbeck
William Stanley, Flitzwater and Sir Gilbert Debenham. Their contact was Sir Robert Clifford.
