Who helped bring about Cromwell’s downfall?

A

his enemies, led by the Duke of Norfolk. it was the marriage to Anne of Cleves that destroyed Cromwell’s credibility to the king. Norfolk aided the downfall by having a niece Catherine Howard who was free to wed the king.

When was Cromwell executed?

A

28th July 1540 after being accused of treason and heresy at a council meeting. Henry and Cathy H married on the same day. two days later, there was the message that the Protestant Reformation cause was in ruins by burning of heresy for three Protestant theologians

What led to his downfall?

A

Opportunity to encourage a foreign Protestant marriage to Anne of Cleves as there was a danger of a joint attack on England following a truce in 1538 between France and Spain. Cromwell misinformed of her appearance and Henry took a dislike to her and demanded that the marriage be cancelled. weakened relationship between Cromwell and Henry.

A
  1. showed that Henry didn’t intend to act against Cromwell at the time. BUT Catherine H was instructed to spread rumours that he wasn’t carrying out the divorce from Anne of Cleves quickly enough. Duke of Norfolk also suggested to Henry that Cromwell was protecting a group of Protestants in Calais.
