The Chemistry of Life, Cytology, Cellular Metabolism Flashcards
What Is Biology?
The Study of Life.
What Are The Characteristics of Life?
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Organization
- Response
- Requires Energy
What is The Scientific Method?
A method in Biology to answer questions about living things.
What Is Chemistry?
The Study Of Matter.
Cells
The smallest unit of life itself
Atoms
The building blocks of elements.
What are Atoms made up of?
Protons, Electrons, And Neutrons.
The First Law of Thermodynamics is?
Matter can not be created or destroyed.
The Second Law of Thermodynamics is?
Entropy; given enough time, everything wears out and falls apart.
The Building Blocks of Life
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acid.
Tissue
A group of cells connected together to carryout a specific function.
Organ
Several tissues that work together to perform a function.
Organ System
a group of organs cooperating to perform a function
Prokaryotic cells
single-celled organisms.
Eukaryotic Cells
Multicellular organisms
What are the three main parts of a Eukaryotic Cell?
- Plasma membrane
- Cytoplasm w/ Organelles
- Nucleus
Autotrophs are?
Producers, they make their own food.
Heterotrophs are?
Consumers, they depend on other organisms for their food
Photosynthesis
the process by which autotrophs absorb energy from the sun and convert it to stored chemical energy.
What are the two phases of Photosynthesis?
- The Light-Dependent phase.
- The Calvin Cycle.
What is ATP?
The chemical energy all cells need to thrive.
Aerobic Respiration
When cells use glucose and oxygen to produce energy.
Anaerobic Respiration
Producing energy without using oxygen.
