The Cell Membrane Flashcards
What are the functions of the cell membrane?
To protect the cell
Control what enters and exits the cell
What are some components of the cell membrane?
CHO, Phospholipids, Proteins, Cholesterol, etc
What does Amphipathic mean?
Has a hydrophobic and hydrophilic region
What are some examples of amphipathic things in the cell membrane?
Phospholipids with their hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail
Proteins imbedded in or outside of membrane
How is fluidity and temperature related?
As temp rises, so does fluidity because the movement of the molecules increases.
What role does cholesterol have in the cell membrane?
When temp rises, cholesterol restricts phospholipid movement
When temp drops, cholesterol prevents tight packing of phospholipids
Is cholesterol in plant cells?
No, just animal cells
Give an example of a plant adaptation
Winter wheat produces more unsaturated fatty acid tails
Give an example of an animal adaptation
Cold water fish-
What kind of proteins are found on the outer and inner surfaces of the membrane?
Peripheral Proteins
What kind of proteins are embedded in the membrane?
Integral Proteins
Give 4 functions of proteins
Transportation, Enzymatic activity, cell to cell recognition, Signal transduction
What is a Glycolipid?
CHO attached to a lipid
What is Glycoprotein?
CHO attached to a protein
How easily do non polar and polar molecules pass through the membrane? What kinds of molecules pass through transport proteins?
Non polar passes with ease
Polar passes through slowly
Bigger molecules such as Glucose, and water in high amounts
