Chapter 8 Photosynthesis Flashcards
Capturing of light energy from the sun and converting it to chemical energy stored in sugar and other molecules.
Photosynthesis
“self-feeders”; produce food for themselves from CO2 and inorganic substances. Also called producers.
Autotrophs
Organisms that use sunlight as a source of energy to make food.
Photoautotroph
Organisms that use chemicals, or inorganic substances to make food. Do NOT use sunlight.
Chemoautotrophs
Obtain energy by consuming the remains of dead organisms such as carcasses, feces, and fallen leaves.
Decomposers
Obtain energy by consuming other organisms. Consumers.
Heteroautotroph
What is the chemical formula for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O –(light energy)–> C6H12O6 +6O2
Statement of photosynthesis:
Photosynthesis uses CO2 and H2O plus light energy to make sugar and release oxygen.
What are the two stages of Photosynthesis?
Light reactions and the Calvin Cycle.
A measure of the amount of energy in a specific wavelength of light is…
A photon
Pigments are…
Substances that absorb visible light
Where do light reactions happen in chlorophyll?
In the thylakoid membrane
How many photosystems are in the light reactions? Which one comes first?
2 Photosystems. Photosystem II comes first, then Photosystem I.
