the cell cycle Flashcards
what are the three stages of the cell cycle?
mitosis
interphase
cytokinesis
what occurs during interphase?
(no division occurs)
G1 - organelles replicate and proteins are synthesised.
S phase - DNA is replicated.
G2 - chromosomes repair and size of cell increases.
what is the G0 phase?
its the resting phase:
- can be temporary
- or for the rest of its life (if they are differentiated cells)
what is the role of the M phase?
- to produce identical daughter cells for growth and asexual reproduction
summarise the stages of the cell cycle.
stage 1 interphase - DNA replicates, number of organelles and vol of cytoplasm increases.
stage 2 mitosis - nucleus divides to produce 2 identical nuclei.
stage 3 cytokinesis - cytoplasm and membrane divide to form 2 genetically identical daughter cells.
why do some eukaryotic cells not undergo the cell cycle?
not all cells have the ability to divide and only cells that have this ability undergo cell cycle.
