T-lymphocytes Flashcards
name the two main types of lymphocytes
- T cells
- B cells
what is humoral immunity?
a type of immune response that occurs when antigens are detected in the body.
what is cell-mediated immunity?
a type of immune response that occurs when a cell is infected by a virus, bacteria or fungi and they detect antigen presenting cells.
what is the role of T cells?
- they are involved in cell-mediated response and detect antigen presenting cells
what is the role of B cells?
- they are involved in humoral response and detect antibodies and antigens in blood and tissue fluid
what is an antigen?
a foreign protein that triggers an immune response
give some examples of antigen presenting cells
- phagocyte that has englufed a pathogen
- a body cell invaded by a pathogen
- cancer cell
what are the two types of T cells?
T helper and T killer cells (cytotoxic)
what is the role of T helper and T killer cells?
- the receptors on T helper cells attach to antigens on invaded cells., which stimulate B cells to divide and produce antibodies
- killer cells cause holes to be made in the cell membrane meaning cells become more permeable to all substances
describe the role of T helper cells in cell-mediated immunity?
they stimulate B cells and cytotoxic cells to divide
