mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
what are the four stages of mitosis?
A
prophase
metaphase
anaphase
telophase
2
Q
what occurs during prophase?
A
- chromosomes condense (become visible) and two chromatids are joined by a centromere.
- nuclear envelope and nucleolus disintegrates and spindle forms.
3
Q
what occurs during metaphase?
A
- spindle fibres attach to chromosomes by centromeres.
- chromosomes line up along the equator of cell (attached by their centromeres to the spindle fibres)
4
Q
what occurs during anaphase?
A
each chromatid splits at the centromere and the chromatids are pulled apart to opposite poles by spindle fibres.
5
Q
what occurs during telophase?
A
- chromatids reach poles and nuclear envelope and nucleolus reforms.
- spindle fibres disintegrates and the cytoplasm divides.
6
Q
what is the purpose of mitosis?
A
to produce identical daughter cells for growth and asexual reproduction.
