Q

4 main cell division events that occur in all organisms

A
  • Cell division signals - related to the needs of the entire organism
  • DNA replication - eukaryotes have >1 chromosome, starts at many origins on the chromosome, and is limited to one part of the cell cycle
  • DNA segregation - mitosis, which separates the newly replicated chromosomes into 2 new nuclei. One copy of each chromosome ends up in each daughter cell
  • Cytokinesis - proceeds differently in animal and plant cells, b/c plants have cell walls

Q

What’s different in prokaryotes

A

Prokaryotes - Cell division (binary fission) results in reproduction. Binary fission begins with cell division signals—usually external factors such as nutrient concentration and environmental conditions

Q

Eukaryotes

A

Internal environmental conditions are often suitable for cell division, but division may not always occur. Cell division signals are related to the needs of the entire organism.

Q

What are the certain checkpoints of the cell cycle?

A

CDK,, they’re at the cell at all times while cyclins only show up at certain points. the restriction point is what controls the G1 to S transition
