Proteins, Carbs, and Lipids Flashcards
What are the 4 macromolecules?
Proteins, carbs, lipids, and amino acids.
All except what are polymers?
Lipids
How are macromolecules formed?
Condensation reaction.
Alpha structure forms what kind of shape?
Helix
Beta structure creates what?
Stacks.
Describe primary structure
The sequence of amino acids.
Secondary structure.
Hydrogen bonds between hydrogens and oxygens in the polypeptide backbone
Tertiary structure.
Folds into a 3D shape, determined by interactions with R groups.
Quaternary structure.
2 or more polypeptides assemble to form larger protein molecules.
Which polysaccharide allows for the most storage?
Glycogen.
Describe saturated fatty acids.
No double bonds between carbons, it’s saturated with H atoms. Ex: animal fats, and they’re solid at room temp. Packed together tightly.
Unsaturated fatty acids.
One or more double bonds in the carbon chain which means that it prevents it being packed together. Ex: plant oils.
