Chemistry of Life Part 1 Flashcards
What are hydrogen bonds?
Attraction between the negative end of one molecule and the positive end of another molecule. They’re incredibly weak.
What are the types of covalent bonds?
Single, Double, Triple, Polar, Nonpolar, and Coordinate.
What are covalent bonds?
Atoms that share one or more pairs of electrons so that the outer shells are filled. It takes a lot of energy for them to break.
What are ionic bonds?
Bonds formed by the transfer of valence electrons to get stability.
What type of sugar is DNA made from?
RNA?
Deoxyribose and ribose.
What does DNA and RNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic acid and Ribonucleic acid
The head of a phospholipid is ________ and the tail is ________
Hydrophilic, hydrophobic.
What are van der Waal forces?
Attraction between nonpolar molecules that are close together. They’re typically weak and brief.
