The Auditory System Flashcards

1
Q

Test confidence: you know all the anatomy?

A

Pinna
Ear canal
Tympanic membrane (ear drum)
sound travels through to hit these
Ossicles: Malleus, Incus, Stapes
these are all connected in mechanical linkage system to then push the membrane
Round window
takes pressure wave that’s transmitted through the system and pushes on this another membrane(don’t worry about name) which then pushes fluid in
Cochlea
inside cochlea has the sensory receptors that respond to movement, which then creates electrical signal to go to brain.

Q

How does the tympanic membrane work?

A

Membrane like membrane on top of drum. How sound wave impacts structure.

Q

Explain how fluid activates receptors?

A

Hair cells (Innervate by nerves) in basal membrane are touching Tectorial membrane. Fluid goes on tectorial membrane and moves it, thereby brushing the hairs stimulating the receptor. But how does this make action potential?

10
Q

Explain how the hair cells in the ear produce action potentials .

A

Specialized sensory cell! Don’t have axons but release neurotransmitter.
