The Alkali metals Flashcards
How do lithium, sodium, and potassium react with water? What is produced?
1) Vigorously
2) Metal hydroxide solution (alkaline)
3) Hydrogen bubbles (fizzing)
What are group 1 metals called?
Alkali metals
Sodium + water=
Sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
How do group 1 metals react with oxygen?
They form metal oxides
Lithium reacts with oxygen to form
Lithium oxide (Li2O)
Sodium reacts with oxygen to form
A mixture of sodium oxide (Na2O) and sodium peroxide (Na2O2)
Potassium reacts with oxygen to form
A mixture of potassium peroxide (K2O2) and potassium superoxide (KO2)
What happens as you go down group 1
The elements get more reactive
Least reactive group 1 metal
Lithium
Most reactive group 1 metal
Potassium
Atoms lose electrons more easily as you move down the group
1) All group 1 metals have 1 outer electron
2) As you go down, the outermost electron is farther from the nucleus
3) Therefore electrostatic forces of attraction are less
4) Therefore, as you go down group 1 the atoms get bigger and the outermost electron is easily lost
5) This makes them more reactive
