Q

What does unsaturated mean?

A

They can make more bonds - the double bond can open up, allowing the two carbon atoms to bond with other atoms.

9
Q

What type of reactions are these?

A

Addition reactions because they double carbon-carbon bond is split and the halogen atom is added to each of the carbons.

Q

How to test for an alkene

A

Add bromine water - the solution will turn clear and colorless from orange. Alkanes don’t react with bromine water as they don’t have a double bond. Therefore, if you add an alkane to bromine water, the solution will stay orange.
