Alkanes Flashcards
What are alkanes?
Chains of carbon atoms surrounded by hydrogen atoms (hydrocarbons).
General formula of alkanes
CnH2n+2
What are the first five alkanes?
Methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane
What does saturated mean?
Single bonds between carbon atoms
How do alkanes burn?
They make up the majority of hydrocarbons in crude oil and tend to combust completely in a good supply of oxygen.
What do alkanes and halogens produce?
Haloalkanes
What condition is required for chlorine and bromine to react with alkanes?
Ultraviolet light
What happens in these reactions?
A hydrogen atom from the alkane is substituted with chlorine or bromine.
Bromine + methane –>
Bromomethane + hydrogen bromide
Propane + oxygen –>
carbon dioxide + water
