The abnormal equine neonate Flashcards
What is neonatal maladjustment syndrome
non-infectious disorder of the central nervous system in newborn foals
- foals are quiet, easy to catch, not aware of surroundings
How to restrain foal
Always restrain foal in visual field of mare
Always restrain one arm around chest and one around bottom
why do we never restrain foals under the abdomen
to prevent chances of bladder rupture
Describe the Madigan foal squeeze
Theory that the journey from the birth canal activates a biochemical switch that enables newborns to transition from a calm, sedative state in the womb to alert consciousness.
Goal is to stimulate the physical pressure of the birth canal and make the foals calm again
List 3 things that we use the madigan foal squeeze for
catheter placement, abdominal ultrasound, thoracic radiograph, etc
Can be used to treat some forms of neonatal maladjustment syndrome
where do we give IM injections in foals
gluteals or semimembranosus/semitendinosus
why do we not give IM injections to foals in their neck
this can prevent nursing
where do we do IV injections in foals
jugular
2 complications of systemic disease in foals
dehydration and hypoglycaemia
when is nutritional support needed in foals
any foal that can’t nurse for more than a few hours
what do we give to foals who can’t site
parenteral nutriton
why is a bucket better than a bottle for feeding foals
they learn to drink for themselves and there is less of an aspiration risk
what do we give foals when feeding them
milk replacer or mare’s milk if possible
how much milk does a normal foal need
20% of body weight consumed in 24 hour period =10L for 50kg foal
